Damn, that one took a while to click, too. Didn’t realize the last podcast was almost a month ago. I was feeling the lack of guitar riffs and lyrics on the house session, so this time around was going to be quite the pendulum swing back to the indie side of things. So many groovy tracks coming out lately from the BlogTroll regulars that whittling down the selections proved to be quite a feat!
I’ll admit that I held back posting the GnR remix earlier to save some thunder for the next mix… Great track. Been dying to share that one.
Including the Midnight Juggernauts track was fun, as it was kind of a personal throw-back to Cut Copy’s Fabriclive release a few years ago. I have been in love with electro ever since.
Track Listing:
Combo - Just Change
Black Kids - I’m Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You
(The Twelves remix)
Faker - This Heart Attack (Miami Horror remix)
The Ting Tings - Great DJ (Calvin Harris remix)
Photo Atlas - Handshake Heartattack (The Glass remix)
Guns N Roses - Sweet Assed Child O’ Mine (DJ Donna Summer remix)
Jupiter One - Countdown (LA Riots remix)
Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor (LA Riots & Villains remix)
Midnight Juggernauts - Shadows
The Black Ghosts - Some Way Through This (Replicants remix)
Tegan and Sara - Walking with a Ghost (Miami Horror remix)

This week’s findings were pretty indie-influenced, likely due to the blogging aftermath of SXSW…
First off, a sweet remix of sweet track from indie favorite Coconut Records. I already liked the original a lot, and the RAC remix makes it all the more appropriate on the dancefloor.
Coconut Records - Nighttiming (RAC remix)
Been coming across various remixes by The Shoes lately, and found two great ones this week. For someone that listens to electronica all day long, I like that their remixes still feel like the rock/indie originals. Just with a little more oomph.
Get Cape Wear Cape Fly - Waiting for the Monster to Drown (The Shoes remix)
Mystery Jets - Young Love (The Shoes remix)
Loving the new Mystery Jets album, BTW…
Holy shit–it’s not a remix! Very mellow track from Loud Pipes from the UK. Just repetitive enough to satisfy my need for sequencer-based music, and that little piano riff makes me warm inside.
Saw this new bootleg from HiJack posted everywhere, and it is a great fidget house track. Like the sample snippets.
Things get a little harder with this Le Castle Vania remix. I’ll admit that I first gave him a listen based on nostalgia for the NES game, but this is now the second great remix I’ve heard and he’s playing at WMC this year. Solid.
Kill the Noise - Hey You (Le Castle Vania remix)
And harder they continue… Yelle’s screetchy voice blends so well with the heavy distortion melody. She will be at Coachella too–I don’t care what the haters say about this year; I think there’s going to be some serious rocking in the desert.
Yelle - Ce Jeu (slaughtered by The Videoband)
I was torn about posting this last one. Not because it isn’t a fine job by Air Jared, but just because I couldn’t decide if the Van Halen track was a classic or just old and cheesy. You decide.

ddpesh has been on my radar for a few months since I came across their Chromeo remix one Sunday and used it in podcast #11. Mohan emailed me their latest remix yesterday, which is just as funky. Hip hop doesn’t get nearly enough love on here, and their take on the Jahcoozi hit is glitchy with a nice breakbeat. Keep ‘em coming, fellas.
Here are both tracks for your Friday listening pleasure…
Jahcoozi - Flatline (ddpesh remix)
Chromeo - Momma’s Boy (ddpesh remix)

Let me begin by saying that the accordion is my new favorite instrument…
I hadn’t been back to the Mayan in ages after going there what seemed like every other week to see DJs in college. Good to be back. We got there, thankfully, just before Kinky went on–figured they would be starting later. Money Mark of the Beastie Boys was opening up, and I’m actually glad we missed that. Sorry, but they are just a tired act now.
Kinky, on the other hand, was anything but. Since I go to so many electronic shows, it was awesome to see all five of them running around on stage. Most of the show was in Spanish, so I had no idea what he was yelling at the crowd to get them cheering and yelling back, but that didn’t even matter. Their music is electronica-infused dance rock, so it was so fun to bounce around to my favorites from their albums.
I was also very impressed by all the gear on stage. The singer shed the mic for a CDJ and mixer for some scratching on one song; the wailing guitarist was hopping onto some sort of synth or MIDI controller from time to time; the stand-up drummer had the biggest percussion array of symbols, toms and bongos (yes, there was also cowbell involved). My interest was unsurprisingly drawn to the Basement Jaxx-esque dude in the back surrounded by synths and digital what-have-you, especially when he strapped on his accordion and sauntered out to the front of the stage…
In a nutshell, the show was the perfect blend of digital enhancements and live performances. Very fun. Their encore choice of Mexican Radio was funny at first, but I was ready for something else as soon as I got beyond the “hey, I recognize that” point. Such a great show that I only bought one drink when we first arrived and stayed on the dancefloor the rest of the time. The post-concert day at work was far less painful than usual!

I thought the Dada Life remix of this Alex Gopher track seriously rocked. The Riot in Belgium re-working is a bit slower, but the breakbeat and choppy melodies are good and funky.
Alex Gopher - Aurora (Riot in Belgium & Knightlife remix)
I am to the point where I grab any remix by The Twelves that I come across. This is a fun track.
Black Kids - I’m Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You
(The Twelves remix)
This track is not new, but I heard it for the first time recently on Sirius and liked it. I’m also very pumped to see Erol Alkan at Coachella soon. I like his grinding electro sets and admire that he plays a ton of his own remixes.
Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To (Erol Alkan remix)
Been seeing Grum’s remixes pop up on Palms Out and elsewhere in the blogosphere more and more lately. This is the best I’ve heard so far. Hard, driving bassline and indie vocals–what could be better?
Late of the Pier - Space and the Woods (Grum remix)
Here is the latest from LCD–a groovy track for the 21 soundtrack, which I think just came out. James Murphy, you are the man.
Chock another one up to the beauty of the blogosphere. Hadn’t heard of Los Valentinos before, but the Peruvian indie band has toured with the likes of Soulwax, WhoMadeWho, The Presets and Datarock. Solid, and the Bag Raiders remix adds a nice electro vibe. You know I can’t get enough of that…
Lost Valentinos - Kafka! (Bag Raiders What Ya’ll Know About Seven remix)
Gotta love Muscles, and this Damage edit makes for quite the house anthem.
Muscles - Lauren from Glebe (Damage edit)
This Rails to Russia track starts off light and then gets dancey in a hurry. Will make for a good podcast intro track. Hmm. Yes. Another reason to look forward to Sundays, though ‘Remix Tuesday’ would be more appropriate since those guys are blowing up and are so busy now.
Rails to Russia - Turning into You (Lismore remix)
I finally clued into why everyone is raving about Crystal Castles. Sweet remix of Soho Dolls here, reminds me of a Ladytron mix.
Soho Dolls - Trash the Rental (Crystal Castles remix)
Wouldn’t be a BlogTroll post without a Fred Falke track! This was doubly good news to hear that Erland Oye has a new album in the works as well. The delay on the vocals makes it quite ethereal.
Whitest Boy Alive - Golden Cage (Fred Falke remix)
[And now off to the KINKY concert with B-Pipe. Woo hoo!]

This guy has been what I look forward to most every Sunday over at Palms Out Sounds for a while now. His tracks are technically remixes, but Chew Fu’s productions are way more than that. Turning well known songs like Sunglasses at Night and Wicked Games into banging hip hop/electro dancefloor killers is genius.
I threw his Jimmy Castor remix into the mix a few podcasts ago, and here are some more gems that I’ve picked up from previous Remix Sundays. Rock on.
Chris Isaak - Wicked Game (Chew Fu remix feat. Lee Majors)
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Chew Fu remix feat. J-Cast & Substantial)
Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night (Chew Fu remix feat. J-Cast, A-Clay, PVH)
Steppenwolff - Born to be Wild (Chew Fu remix feat. A-Clay & Lee Majors)

First up we have even more Fred Falke, in which he teams up with Savage for another house beauty. Love the funky bassline.
Fred Falke & Savage - Wait for Love
Groove Armada got the nod for the next installment in the LateNightTales series, which, along with its good friend Another Late Night, is right up there with the Fabric releases for me in terms of religious following. This is an original release by GA for the compilation mix.
Groove Armada - Are “Friends” Electric?
I hadn’t the original of this Hard-Fi track before, but the remix by Minotaur is quintessential disco punk. Very indie and very dancey. Tommy likey.
I just wasn’t feeling the Soulwax mix on the new Hot Chip single. LA Riots AND Villains combine forces for a banger though!
Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor (LA Riots & Villains remix)
I finally starting listening to Kid Sister recently, and this is the second banging electro remix that I’ve heard. Looking forward to her show with A-Trak at Coachella. The 1/2Alive guys continue to shine…
Kid Sister - Control (TonyX’s 1/2Alive edit)
This reminded me of Moulinex track. Justice used a SymbolOne track on their rejected Fabric mix–which would have made a sweet Back to Mine, BTW. It was far closer to “after hours grooving” than the Liam Howlett BTM, and it was an equally interesting insight into what has influenced their music.
Nid & Sancy - M.U.S.I.C. (SymbolOne remix)
Adam Freeland mixed this into his GU 32 mix, and I thought it worked well. This new Curtis Vodka remix ads a fat beat and retains the original vibe of the hit track.
Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye (Curtis Vodka remix)
Justice can do no wrong. Currently #1 on the list to see, and the clock is ticking for Coachella. Opted to not go to the Mayan show with Diplo since I will see them both in the desert.
Justin Timberlake - Love Stoned (Justice remix)
More electro goodness from over at RedThreat. Falsettos and house music go so well together.
Yeasayer - Sunrise (Hey Champ remix)
Here is a bonus little mashup remix that I found, too. Not bad. A little slow to develop.

Ok, G-Unit, here it is–the often eluded to, never quite finished house mix. Just for you, homey. No guitars or analog instruments, no indie whining. Just pure unadulterated house music with a thumping four-four beat. This will have admittedly less blog appeal, but that’s just the way it goes. I’m still a househead underneath this hipster veneer, and putting this mix together was a quite a pleasurable process.
It starts off very melodic with Falke and gets progressively harder and dirtier by the end, culminating in who else but a MSTRKRFT track. Includes new tracks from the BlogTroll as well as some older, personal faves.
It was interesting that it took me quite a bit longer than usual to feel good about the structure and cohesiveness of this one. I guess I really have found my EDM niche, and this was a bit of a deviation from it. Nevertheless, this is a fun mix and was a good opportunity to pull out some of the bangers that don’t otherwise fit the indie mold.
Track Listing:
The Outrunners - Cool Feeling (Anoraak remix)
Fred Falke - Love Theme
Chromeo - Needy Girl (Lifelike remix)
Cut Copy - Lights & Music (Moulinex remix)
Deep Dish - Everybody’s Wearing my Head
Brad Hed - Girls and Boyz (Vandalism club mix)
Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box (White Trash Kids on Crank remix)
Freeform Five - No More Conversations (Mylo remix)
The Freaks - The Creeps (Vandalism remix)
Alex Gopher - Aurora (Dada Life remix)
MSTRKRFT - Community Revolution in Progress

First off, a few artists that I learned of through Cryptic. He has busted Phones, DFA and Teki Latex tracks in the past, so I gave these remixes a listen since I recognized the remixers. So glad I did! The Phones remix is a perfect mix of synths and whiny vocals, and I think I like the MIA track even more than the original. DFA also has a pretty sweet remix of DARE by Gorillaz if you can find it… One more Chromeo remix won’t hurt either, especially if it has a nice little Bmore beat behind it.
White Rose Movement - Love is a Number (Phones remix)
MIA - Paper Planes (DFA remix)
Chromeo - Bonafied Lovin’ (Hatchmatik remix feat. Teki Latex)
With all the great electro coming out of France, one might forget about Germany. But only for a split second until one remembers Digitalism, Boys Noize, etc. etc. Tomcraft is also representing here with a nice, techy remix.
Atomic Hooligan - I Don’t Care (Tomcraft remix)
Speaking of Digitalism, here is an albeit not new track that I somehow overlooked on Idealism since Pogo and Zdarlight where so banging. And this is just as guitar-laden as the others. Can’t wait to throw this into a mix.
For those that dug the Little Boots track posted earlier, check out this nice disco remix her former gig, Dead Disco. Even disco’ier?
Dead Disco - Automatic (Raufast’s Disco Indie remix)
And more smoove grooves from Ghosthustler as well. This is the second release I’ve come across by these guys now, and I’m loving both. Reminds me of Falke and Braxe.
Ghosthustler - Someone Else’s Ride
Double whammy here. Not only have I raved about The Glass many times on here, but Mylo also weighs in on this one, too. So the track is a little housier than other The Glass tracks, but that is never a bad thing.
The Glass - Hear the Music (Mylo remix)
I randomly came across some tracks by Lo-Fi-Fnk and they are very groovy and mellow. A cool electronic indie group. The Teenagers are all over the blogosphere, and their remix was my favorite of the bunch. Very NYPC’esque.

Sweet Jesus, that was a rocking good time. We got there before 10:00, and LA Riots already had the dancefloor filled and moving with his gnarly electro set. I had heard a couple good remixes by LA Riots, and his set was more of the same. It was an 18+ night, so all the kids must have taken drugs right after their moms dropped them off or something… Nevertheless, I was frankly a little amazed to see all the indie types embracing the EDM.
Z-Trip came on next, and I was curious about how smooth a transition it would be to go from banging electro to hip hop mashups and then back. But he pulled it off. Even though I admire such a vinyl purist, Z-Trip had a laptop off to the side! Digital is taking over… He had a little of the DJ/drummer combo going, which I am honestly not down for because it feels very practiced. But his beats were as varied and old school as ever. Mashup tracks may a little tired by now, but when he’s mixing the tracks live on stage, it is pure wizardry.
All the prior acts were further back on the stage, but then the lights came on, the crazy Canadians were right down in front of us. [Snapped some pics from the fray.] I have to say that that was the most energetic show I’ve been to in a long time. The whole place was jumping around and going nuts. Fucking mind blowing. Usually I like to have my space carved out so I can boogey, but being part of the sweaty, packed mosh pit was awesome.
I’ve never had a club experience feel so much like a rock concert before, and the tunes just kept getting harder and harder. Drenched in sweat, calves burning from jumping, biceps burning from pumping, ears crackling–my idea of a good time.
MSTRKRFT has been number one on my list of peeps to see, so I had very, very high expectations for the show. Said expectations were promptly met and exceeded. All my concert write-ups are positive because I only go to shows that I really want to see. But that. Was. Amazing.
For those that can’t get enough, here is a bonus set from their NYE gig:
